What are Extended Services?

March 9, 2010 · No Comments

We were all delighted by the visit of the Lord Mayor, Councillor Mike Storey, to present us with our reward for achieving the full core offer of Extended Services. You will see the certificate displayed near reception.

Springwood Heath, though a small school, now offers all of its children a whole variety of out of the working day activities;

  • a lively Breakfast Club – Wii and all
  • many different sports activities, including football, athletics, swimming
  • a happy school choir
  • a committed Bible Club
  • links with after school clubs in the community
  • a partnership with Hunts Cross Children’s Centre

We also host swimming classes for children living within the wider community as well as welcoming adult disabled swimmers.

Watch out for yet a new activity – the Springwood Heath Film Club when children can stay behind on a Thursday evening to enjoy a variety of films , including the latest blockbusters as well as favourite classics in the safety and comfort of school. Numbers will be limited.

So mums and dads, encourage your children to take part in, at least, one of these many activities and take advantage of our extended services.

Welcome to 2010

December 31, 2009 · No Comments

A very happy new year to all Springwood Heath families.

We are all looking forward to building on the successes of 2009 and providing for your children the most exciting and rewarding  opportunities we can so that they have every chance of achieving  their potential.

We also want parents to feel that they can have a greater input into the school’s continued development. During the coming term there will be events which, we hope, will help you to become more involved e.g. e-safety evening, find out about SEAL. These will be important for your children as well as for you – make the time and join us in moving Springwood Heath into the next decade.

E-Safety

November 29, 2009 · No Comments

I have mentioned many times how use of computers can enhance your child’s learning and what we do in school to make that happen. I am aware that many families now have facilities at home to do the same. I am sure you will be interested to know of a new project we are involved with, allowing small groups of children to have use of a Toshiba Notebook with wireless internet connection to undertake a joint home/school work task. At the end of this initial project the children will present their project to a wider school audience, including parents.

As you all are aware we believe that children learning how to use the internet wisely and sensibly is one of the new life skills that is essential to each child as they grow up in an ever more technological age, but I would also like to take this opportunity once again to remind you that, if used incorrectly, the internet can present children with unknown dangers.

Therefore, it is important that parents also play their part in making sure that their child is using only websites appropriate to their age– did you know that it is actually illegal for a child under the age of thirteen to have an acoount on Facebook or MySpace. Always make sure that you have checked the safety settings—if you are not sure,  come along to school on Tuesday 5th January to find out more—further support can be found on the ICT Blog Page.

Springwood Heath – a 21st Century School

October 4, 2009 · No Comments

Already one month into the new school year and the children and staff of Springwood Heath are into their stride. I am delighted to see how well all the children new to the school have settled and become lively members of the Springwood Heath family.

Most of the teaching staff have taken on different year groups this year and they too have started with great enthusiasm and providing all of your children with an exciting curriculum.

Already happened – Our Bike It Programme is underway, many children have started or are continuing music lessons and had fun at a music workshop, football, swimming and athletics teams are in training for this term’s competitions, most children took part in the Junior Chef Days, parents met up with their child’s new teacher, a Family Barn Dance provided great fun for families and friends and Y6 have had an interesting day discovering the Sandstone Trail around Woolton Village.

Soon to happen – Y1,Y2 and Y5 off to workshops at the Walker Art Gallery; older juniors will be taking part in a Healthy Eating Roadshow, football and athletics tournaments; planned residential trips for Y5 and Y6 to Colomendy and Llangollen respectively and further improvements to the playground areas.

Springwood Heath is really a busy forward thinking school - we are having an Open Morning on Thursday 8th October 2009, between 10.00 and 11.30. If you wish to see why and how Springwood Heath provides such a rich, welcoming and safe environment for children, contact Liz Culshaw on 0151 427 7759  or e-mail springwood-ao@springwood.liverpool.sch.uk and let us know you are coming.

Healthy Eating

February 6, 2009 · No Comments

It still concerns me that many children who bring packed lunches to school are eating far too many sugary and salty foods, and not balancing them with fruit and vegetables. Too many crisps and chocolate biscuits are creeping back into their lunch boxes.

This is happening at a time when the dinners provided by school are better than ever, nutritionally balanced and giving the children a wide choice of interesting and tasty foods to eat—as well as providing them with a choice of sandwiches, if they prefer, and a daily choice of salad or fruit.

Also from time to time, there are special theme meals, like that on Thursday 12th February when there will be Chinese Menu to recognise the Chinese New Year—look out for the menu on the noticeboards. All children are welcome to try this menu.
